Bob's ART du Jour

Hi, I'm Bob Eggleton and this is my painting and "life in general blog" but mostly paintings. Usually they're for sale. Anyway, if you like something contact me at zillabob@cox.net and ENJOY!!

Name:
Location: New England, United States

I am a Hugo award-winning fantasy/SF artist who works on both publishing projects and film concept work(such as Jimmy Neutron and most recently, The Ant Bully) but I have a passion for landscape work, small paintings and exploring the properties of paint. This blog will mostly showcase my "painting-for-the-day" as kind of a personal voyage. I'll also be inserting sketches, photos and ideas of projects I am working on, that I can, when I can, so look for those every so often(usually as paint is drying!)

Turner would be turning in his grave...

It's time for UK's vaunted The Turner Prize. Sponsored by The Tate Modern, it's a large cash award for a piece of art. A few years ago one of the finalists entered a plagerized painting from an SF bookcover by artist Tony Roberts(he did it in the 70's) and saw nothing wrong. The "art" ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous and this year is no exception with a focus on the "ridiculous".

JMW Turner, whom the prize is named in honor of, would probably be turning in his grave if he saw what "prize" was named in his honor. Turner was only the greatest painter from England, ever. He's a huge inspiration on me as well.

Anyway, take a look and a read to understand further!

Augh! I try to be understanding but, really! My wife calls me an art snob at times like these but I really can't fathom what goes through some people's minds! Sometimes I think it's more about creating an outlandish esoteric explanation for trash.

I think I'll go smash a table and see if I can get in to an exhibit somewhere... Sheeeshhh!

p.s. After reading the post and accompanying article she just apologized for calling me an art snob - "this time".

It's really amazing what constitutes the "high brow" art work these days. I took a course in it at RISD and attempted to understand it. I still didn't. I do see what they're getting at but, to vaunt it up with some kind of lasting art like Turner's...yikes!

This is the kind of artwork I was expected to do at my university. I am extra grateful for your "What You Don't Learn in Art School" series of blog posts because for me, what I learned in art school was really not applicable to the kind of art I actually WANT to be doing (and no, I don't know why I didn't transfer once I figured out what kind of art training was being offered!).

Tell me about it. It was typical of what was expected "circa 1979" in artschool! Realism was poo-pooed especially by one particular idiot "design" professor who was more into the couch calling with female students than he was into any "art". He;'s still teaching.

Ugh, it's been going on since 1979? I graduated in 2006 and that was essentially the ONLY kind of art that was accepted. In my sophomore portfolio review the professors said (rather chastisingly, I thought) that a fine arts education is a fine background for an illustrator. In my classes, classmates and teacher alike would call my work "illuuuustrative" if they didn't like it. I was fortunate enough not to have any skeezy art professors, but it sounds like yours found the perfect teaching situation for himself. Sheesh!

The problem is that, in the end, a trade school is better for one going to "art" school. The skills are more practical. Alot of these vaunted, expensive art colleges don't do anything to help one deal with the real world. Sure it's fun to slap paint around but then you need the business skills and, realism is just not favored. I go into museums and I *see* the work I *like* and I know why I like it. I took a course in appreciating abstract work and it was okay and I understand it more..but..I still don't want to be doing it. I'll take realism!

Seriously, WTF?

I was blessed to see the "Turner to Monet" exhibition of landscapes this year at the Australian National Gallery. My son and I sat on the floor and beheld the absolute glory of Turner's Crossing the Brook and Constables' The Leaping Horse, Camille Corot, etc to say nothing of the brace of fine Monets (my all time absolute favourite artist).

How in God's name can those crap installations even be mentioned in the same breath as Turner?

I am all for abstract art (speaking as one who cannot draw a bloody circle for goodness sake), but that cough*art*cough, is just beyond the pale. I repeat WTF.

Sorry, I'm just outraged that Turner's name can be so besmirched...

I truly can try and appreciate most art, but when it is just so random, with so little care... It just seems such a deliberate con job, lazy rip off.

Hmm. I might go and get a dead rat and paint it red and suspend it in green cordial in a big blue jar put the jar inside a huge cat's mouth and have a small dog chasing the cat followed by a ginormous rat, thus symbolising... Oh wait, I don't have to say!!!! And and and and it will WIIINNNNNN I tell you......

I think they should rename the Turner Prize to the Picasso Prize or somesuch. Turner would make a great lathe - he's spinning in his grave so much.

Ooh, Annie. I wish we were visiting you this year to go see the Turners, Constables and Degas. :-D And every visit to England includes at least one visit to the Tate (real Tate) to worship the Turners and all our favourite classics.

Our art book collection is huge and grows exponentially. :-D

Love,
Mari

It's critics that create this art-ificial world, as it were. They build press on it and it works. Like mass hysetria everyone believes it's something. My favorite Tate MOdern story was the "installation" of Garbage bags that was taken out, accidently AS trash.
